Here's what you'll find around town:
Distance: 12 minutes walking
Walk along the coast of Mexico’s largest lake. The beautiful boardwalk, called the “malecon” in Spanish, features a local market, native dancers and a skate park.
Distance: 15 minutes driving
Our neighboring town of Ajijic is a must-see— known for its bright colors, artisan shops, and excellent cuisine.
Distnace: 15 minutes by boat
Sitting in the middle of Lake Chapala, you can get to Scorpion Island by hiring a small boat driver. Although it isn’t as dangerous a place as it sounds, the island guides can teach you to tame a scorpion with ease!

Chapala sits in the mountains at an altitude of 5,000 feet. You can climb even higher in “El Tepalo.” This hike is of medium difficulty, and the full loop stretches 3 miles. If you make the trek during the rainy season, the hike will reveal three beautiful waterfalls.

There are two local movie theaters, both recently renovated. If theater relaxing is your speed, you’ll find all the latest movies in English for the incredible ticket price of $2.50.

Tobolandia is our local water park. Here, you’ll find several pools, a lazy lagoon and six water slides (plus all the typical, Mexican snack food you could want.)

Although there are many plant nurseries that are closer, this one is worth the drive. Their model cactus garden has been growing for decades, sporting every varietal imaginable. Tour their greenhouse rooms filled with thousands of baby cactus (each around $3), and maybe pick a few up for your dorm room!

If you like tacos as much as we do, then prepare yourself. There is a street taco cart on nearly every corner in Chapala. Taco eating begins around sundown with carts opening at 7pm every night of the week. Steak? Chorizo? Pastor? We got it all.
